Who Can Benefit
'I Don't Get Supervision'My boss doesn't have the time and/or the skills to devote to me, or give me the support and feedback that I would like - that I need - in order to be effective at my job. I need someone's undivided attention to help me with my professional development.
'Even At the Top I Need a Sounding Board'
I'm the CEO of a large firm. There are occasions when I need a sounding board; someone with whom I can confidentially talk out situations that come up, often just to keep myself clear so that I can work with my team more effectively. It isn't that I need answers. What I need is a different perspective; to hear myself talk, where the listener doesn't have a vested interest in the outcome and is independent enough, and perceptive enough, to challenge me if I need it.
'I'm Not Good at Everything'
I run my own business and I'm not an expert at every aspect of what that entails. I need some coaching on the people aspects, both customers and employees, to make sure that I make the best decisions for my business. I'm so busy, I tend to get lost in the daily minutiae and need someone to remind me of the bigger picture.
'I Need Help with My Project'
My project isn't my 'job' in the traditional sense, although it may develop into one. I need someone with whom to discuss my ideas, frustrations and aspirations. My friends and family are understandably fed up with hearing about it and I need someone who will be straight with me, and whom I'm paying, to make it 'my' time.
'Now Where?'
I've been at home raising kids for five years and I'm a different person now than I was when I left my job. I need some guidance and perspective to find my way back into work that will be rewarding and yet flexible for me... Or … I seem to have lost my sense of direction. I'm not happy with what I've been doing for the last ten years. I'm not challenged or motivated and it's beginning to show in my work and my relationships with my colleagues. I need some help to re-find myself and make some changes.
'I Have a Personal Problem'
There is something niggling at me on a personal level and I don't know what it is. It affects the way I am at work and how I interact with my boss and my peers, as well as my family. I don't feel comfortable going to the Human Resources department because I suspect that my problem is about more than just work. I've never been to a therapist and don't know if I even need one or I've been to a therapist and that isn't what I need.
'We have a Problem in Our Group' or 'We're in a Mess'
In my department, and probably in the whole organization, we're not very good at dealing with being stuck or with interpersonal conflicts. We need someone to step in and give us some perspective as well as to suggest some tools we could use. I'm afraid to do anything in case I make it worse but I'm finding it counter-productive and stressful to work in this environment.
'Working Alone Requires Support'
I work from home, on my own. There are times when I need some constructive feedback from someone who will give me the straight goods on where and how I may be getting in my own way or losing my focus. Working alone is great and I prefer it that way but every once in a while I need some outside input or even encouragement.
'I've Got a Problem with an Employee'
One of the people who reports to me has issues with working as part of the team. I have tried everything I know to discuss the problem and offer my support and I've run out of options. The employee is worth saving but I don't know what else to do and I don't have the time to devote to the issue without neglecting the rest of my job. I need some help.
